Rideshare Earnings Playbook: Know Your Real Hourly
Share
Most drivers track the wrong number. Gross pay is what the app shows you; real hourly is what the shift actually paid after the car takes its cut.
Real hourly = (gross pay - fuel - vehicle cost) / total hours on shift. Vehicle cost is total miles, paid and unpaid, times your per-mile rate. Pick one rate and keep it. The guide's example: 6 hours, $132 gross, 148 miles, $18 of fuel and $89 of vehicle cost at $0.60 a mile leaves about $4.20 an hour. The night felt fine. The math disagrees.
The fix is three habits. Track gross, total miles, and hours for every shift - 30 seconds in a notes app. Set a floor before you log on, and go home when you sit under it for two straight hours. And work the five peak windows (morning commute, lunch, evening commute, dinner hours, weekend bar close) instead of grinding the dead hours between them, because a split shift beats a 10-hour grind with fewer miles on the car. The playbook also does quest math - a $60 quest for 20 rides is $3 a ride, already spent if it forces six bad rides - and shows how to run two apps by dollars per mile and per minute without double-ping trouble.
